Our Co‑operative Model: Parent Participation & Community at Lakehill Preschool

At Lakehill Preschool, families are active and valued members of our learning community. As a non‑profit, co‑operative preschool, we welcome children, parents, caregivers, and extended family members to take part in meaningful volunteer roles that support both the classroom experience and the day‑to‑day operation of the preschool. This collaborative approach has been central to our strong sense of community and has supported Lakehill Preschool for over 50 years.

In addition to optional classroom participation, each family contributes to the preschool’s operation as part of their membership with the Vancouver Island Cooperative Preschool Association (VICPA). Every household takes on one volunteer role, helping ensure the preschool runs smoothly while building strong connections among families.

Volunteer roles vary based on interest and availability and may include serving on the Executive Committee (President, Secretary, or Treasurer), acting as a Classroom Representative, supporting indoor or outdoor maintenance, assisting with seasonal fundraising and events, or taking on special projects throughout the year.

Families also work together on community‑building fundraising initiatives such as bake sales, silent auctions, and bottle drives. Seasonal fundraisers may include Purdy’s Chocolates, Scholastic Book Sales, and Hilltop Greenery (poinsettias and hanging baskets). These shared efforts help support our program while strengthening relationships within our preschool community.
